The O-ring is the most widely used seal in history due to its simplicity, low cost, ease of installation, and small space requirements. O-rings are designed for both static and dynamic applications. A properly designed O-ring groove allows the O-ring to be squeezed diametrically out-of-round even before the application of pressure. The O-ring seals by distortion of its resilient elastic compound to fill the leakage path.
Quad rings have the same diameters and cross sections as an O-ring, only the profile is different. Square cut rings have the same ID as an O-ring, but have different cross sections.
